What is a conservation area

There are currently 26 conservation areas in Bolton, ranging from the whole town centre to the small rural villages of the west pennine moors.

We have a duty under present legislation to designate areas of land considered to have outstanding historic or architectural interest. Conservation areas protect the best of the townscape and natural environment, illustrate the evolution of Bolton and provide an historic framework for future development.

You may need to get planning permission before you plan work on a property in a conservation area:

  • to demolish buildings
  • to demolish parts of buildings or other structures
  • for external works to property
  • for work to trees
  • for advertisements
  • for work that would normally be viewed as permitted development.
